The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is a clamshell-style foldable smartphone released in 2024. It brings some improvements over its predecessor but, most importantly, introduces new capabilities through AI-powered software. These enhancements make the unique form factor of the foldable device more convenient for everyday use.
AI Features and Functionality
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 incorporates a wide range of AI features. Basic functionalities include suggested replies on the cover display, which analyses the context of previous messages to offer responses. More advanced capabilities include translating PDF documents and creating summaries, composing emails and social media captions using simple text prompts, and adding drawn objects to images. There are also AI tools specifically designed to take advantage of the clamshell-style foldable form factor. The Galaxy AI-powered interpreter tool supports conversation mode on the Galaxy Z Flip 6, allowing both speakers to view translations on either the main or cover display.
While many of the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s AI features are helpful in specific environments, some features simply add fun to the experience. For instance, the photo app includes a new portrait studio that uses AI editing to create various portraits in 3D cartoon, watercolour, sketch, and comic styles. Another fun feature is Instant Slow-Mo, which allows users to watch a video in slow motion simply by tapping it during playback.
Design and Display
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 showcases some design improvements, such as flat edges for a better in-hand experience. The hinges on both sides of the smartphone have been enhanced, reducing the visibility of creases on the main display. The device is rated IP48, making it dust-resistant and one of the only foldable devices with top-tier water resistance.
The displays are slightly brighter, but they maintain the same size and resolution as the previous model. The interface on the cover display has been modified to be more effective, though there is still no native support for all applications; it is managed through widgets and gestures.
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 continues to feature a dual-camera setup on the cover display, with a new 50-megapixel main sensor that supports 2x in-sensor zoom. This sensor provides consistent performance in all lighting conditions, similar to the main model of the Galaxy S24 series. Image quality is good but not flagship-grade.
Portrait photography is a strong area for this sensor, enhancing the overall camera performance. The 2x in-sensor zoom offers optical image quality comparable to good lighting, though it diminishes in low light. The ultra-wide-angle camera sensor is adequate but not equivalent to the main sensor. The 10-megapixel in-display camera sensor, while not as impactful, can be used for front shots with the main dual-camera system, without compromising overall image performance. The 10-megapixel sensor is sufficient for video conferencing and calls when needed.
Performance and Battery Life
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 delivers top-tier performance, a smooth interface, and all-day battery life. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy system-on-chip, the phone excels in performance, thermal management, and power efficiency. It is generally easy to use and suitable for any task. Most importantly, it offers all-day battery life with its 4000 mAh battery. However, charging the battery is still time-consuming and is one of the phone’s weaker aspects. Like other Samsung smartphones, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 does not come with a charging adapter but includes a dual-sided USB Type-C cable.
