OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, wrote a blog post following the launch of ChatGPT-4o. Altman stated that the new LLM (Large Language Model) is smarter and more enjoyable compared to the previous versions of ChatGPT.
The idea of AI coexisting with or dominating humanity has been extensively explored in popular fiction. In books, films, and web series, we often hear stories about the impact of AI on humankind. And OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, believes that the kind of AI seen in movies is now a reality, thanks to his company’s latest release, GPT-4o. OpenAI hosted its Spring Update event on Monday night and made several announcements that sent waves through the tech world.
Among these announcements was the introduction of GPT-4o, a smarter version of the current ChatGPT, which runs on GPT-3.5 for non-premium users.
GPT-4o promises significant speed improvements, making it a powerful upgrade compared to its predecessors. This model will deliver responses with low latency, as demonstrated during a live demo at the event. Additionally, GPT-4o goes beyond text-based interactions by incorporating voice and vision capabilities. Users can now talk directly to ChatGPT and receive verbal responses, making the AI feel more like a human conversation partner. The vision functionality, still in the rollout phase, will enable the AI to interpret visual data from the user’s environment, enhancing its practicality in real-world applications.
In a blog post about GPT-4o, Altman described it as “smart, fast, fun, natural, and helpful.” He added that the new voice and video modes in GPT-4o offer “the best computer interface he has ever used,” making it “feel like movie AI.” OpenAI’s CEO further expressed his amazement that such technology exists today. “Reaching human-level response time and expressiveness is a significant shift,” he wrote.
Altman mentioned that talking to a computer had never felt “natural” to him, but now it does, and he believes the future is exciting. “Talking to a computer has never felt truly natural to me; now it does. As we add (optional) personalization, access to your information, the ability to work on your behalf, and much more, I see a truly exciting future where we can use computers in ways that are far beyond what we’ve experienced before,” he added.
In the same blog post, Altman also mentioned that he is proud that ChatGPT remains free and ad-free for users. He added that initially, OpenAI wanted to create something beneficial for the world using AI. But now, the company is looking forward to creating AI and letting others use it to “create all kinds of amazing things,” from which we will all benefit.
