Bob Sutor, former quantum lead at IBM, joins Nu Quantum’s board as it expands in the US.
- Sutor brings decades of expertise from leading IBM’s quantum programme and roles in academia.
- Nu Quantum eyes growth in the US with new operations in Los Angeles.
- The company aims to build a scalable, fault-tolerant quantum network.
- Sutor believes Nu Quantum is essential for achieving Practical Quantum Advantage.
Bob Sutor, previously the quantum computing lead at IBM, has joined the board of the Cambridge startup, Nu Quantum. His addition comes as the company gears up for its expansion into the United States. Sutor’s nearly 40-year tenure at IBM saw him at the forefront of the organisation’s quantum initiatives, making his move to Nu Quantum a significant gain for the ambitious startup.
Sutor has also contributed to the field through his affiliations with Infleqtion, a New York-based quantum group, and as an adjunct associate professor at the University of Buffalo. These roles underscore his deep commitment and expertise in quantum computing, indicating the depth of knowledge he will bring to Nu Quantum’s board.
Nu Quantum, which successfully raised £7 million last November, is positioning itself to enhance its presence in the US market by establishing a new base in Los Angeles. The startup is focused on advancing a unit designed to integrate quantum computers into a robust, fault-tolerant network capable of catalysing industry-wide technological transformations.
Carmen Palacios-Berraquero, CEO of Nu Quantum, stated that Sutor’s involvement is a ‘huge step change’ for the company. She emphasised that his belief in Nu Quantum, coupled with his experience and connections, comes at a pivotal moment as the company embarks on this critical phase of transatlantic expansion.
Sutor himself articulated the importance of Nu Quantum’s mission, describing it as the necessary evolution in quantum computing to unlock its full potential. He stressed that without effective quantum networking, the field would remain limited to small systems, unable to reach the desired levels of Practical Quantum Advantage that are crucial for significant societal and industrial applications.
Bob Sutor’s appointment marks a pivotal moment for Nu Quantum as it seeks to expand its influence within the US quantum industry.
