A judge in Cartagena, Colombia, reportedly used the artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT to assist in making a court ruling. According to a report by Vice, Judge Juan Manuel Padilla García confirmed that he used ChatGPT to “ask legal questions about the case.”
The judge assured that the decision itself was not made by ChatGPT, clarifying that his role was not replaced by AI.
“The reasoning for this decision will be determined using artificial intelligence. Therefore, we present some parts of the legal issues in this process… The purpose of including these AI-generated texts is not to replace the judge’s decision… What we aim for is to optimize the time spent drafting decisions by relying on the information provided by AI,” the official document states.
The fact that a judge has used an AI tool in the decision-making process highlights the growing importance of these systems across various professional fields in the future.
