OpenAI’s ChatGPT is one of the world’s most popular generative AI tools, and it has garnered significant attention since its launch in 2022. Now, OpenAI has revealed that ChatGPT has surpassed 200 million active weekly users, and Apple’s iOS 18 is expected to further increase this number.
The number of weekly active users has doubled since November last year, with OpenAI confirming to Axios that ChatGPT’s weekly active user count has risen from 100 million to 200 million. According to the company’s data, 92% of Fortune 500 companies are now using OpenAI’s products.
Since the launch of GPT-4o Mini, the usage of the ChatGPT API has also doubled. This model is significantly cheaper and more capable compared to the previous GPT-3.5.
“People are now using our tools as part of their daily lives, bringing real changes in fields like healthcare and education—whether it’s helping with routine tasks, solving complex problems, or unlocking creativity,” OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman said in a statement to Axios.
While these numbers are already impressive, OpenAI is likely to gain even more ChatGPT users by the end of the year, partly due to Apple. This is because it was announced at WWDC 2024 that iOS 18 will integrate ChatGPT with Siri. This means that when Apple Intelligence is unable to answer a question, Siri will suggest that users ask ChatGPT for the answer.
This integration is expected to be introduced with a future release of iOS 18 later this year. Bloomberg reported that Apple is not paying OpenAI for this partnership, nor is OpenAI paying Apple. Instead, Apple believes that the exposure OpenAI receives through the iOS 18 integration is “as valuable, if not more, than monetary compensation.”
