Lidl has successfully acquired council approval for a new supermarket situated off Albert Road, Hollinwood, in Oldham, aligning with its broader UK expansion strategy. The store is strategically placed just off the M60, optimising accessibility for the local community and ensuring ease of travel for consumers.
The planned construction will cover nearly 2,000 square metres, of which over 1,300 square metres is dedicated to retail space—a substantial increase from an initial proposal of 500 square metres. This enlargement came after assessing the potential community benefits and impact, and demonstrates Lidl’s commitment to providing extensive shopping facilities within the region.
The approved site is designed to support sustainable transport options, including two electric vehicle charging ports, alongside dedicated spaces for parents with children and disabled consumers. Operating hours have been designated from 7:00 to 23:00, Monday to Saturday, and 10:00 to 18:00 on Sundays, facilitating flexible shopping times.
Lidl’s investment in the Oldham borough includes plans to create up to 40 new jobs, with a focus on hiring locally and offering competitive entry-level wages starting at £11.40 per hour. This initiative is expected to provide a substantial boost to the local economy, as highlighted by Lidl’s representatives during the planning meetings.
Councillor Brian Holbin expressed optimism about the development’s impact on the local area, welcoming the investment and the anticipated job creation. Additionally, the store will compete against nearby retailers such as Morrisons, Asda, and BBM Supermarket, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape of local grocery retail.
Lidl’s new supermarket not only enhances local consumer access but also underscores significant economic and competitive advancements within Oldham.
