An international hotel group has announced plans to launch a 200-bedroom hotel in Middlesbrough under the Fairfield by Marriott brand. This venture aims to bolster local infrastructure and stimulate the economy through tourism and hospitality services. The Middlesbrough Development Corporation Board is currently reviewing the plans, which if approved, could see work begin as soon as early summer next year.
The hotel is part of a larger development strategy for the Gresham area, involving significant input from experienced property developers iMpeC and Buccleuch Property. The aim is to provide high-quality accommodation that supports the local economy, particularly by attracting professionals and retaining talent in the area, aligning with Teesside University’s growth initiatives.
Strategically located on the corner of Borough Road near Union Street and Hartington Road, the project is poised to redefine the locale’s landscape. The Middlesbrough Development Corporation seeks approval of Cycas as the preferred hotel operator, with Wates selected as the potential construction contractor. This approval is crucial for moving the project to the construction phase.
Middlesbrough mayor Chris Cooke emphasised the significance of the project, noting its potential to revamp the Newport ward and enhance the town’s gateways. This development is pivotal in the town’s effort to attract investment and provide essential services for the workforce involved in projects in Middlesbrough and Teesworks.
Alongside the hotel, the first phase of the proposed masterplan includes planning applications for five mews houses, and over 230 build-to-rent properties, with provisions for a new student accommodation block hosting over 400 residents. This comprehensive development effort is designed to foster community growth and economic stability.
The planned development of the Fairfield by Marriott hotel in Middlesbrough is set to significantly contribute to local economic growth and community development.
