Around 250 new jobs are set to be established in the North East region following the commitment of parcel delivery firm DPD to expand its operations with a significant distribution centre at a newly developed £100 million business park. In addition to the new positions, the project will safeguard 125 existing jobs, providing a substantial boost to the local employment landscape.
Richardson Barberry, acting as both developer and investor, has finalised a 25-year lease with DPD for a substantial 63,000 square foot warehouse situated on an eight-acre plot at Forrest Park, strategically located alongside Junction 59 of the A1(M) at Newton Aycliffe, Durham. This major decision follows the joint venture’s efforts to revitalize the area with the planning of eight warehouses, poised to deliver 1.8 million square feet of industrial space and generate over 3,000 jobs within the next decade.
Jon Robinson, development director for Barberry, remarked on the significance of this agreement, highlighting the site’s appeal due to its strategic location and the potential to attract further investment. He said, “This is a major pre-let to DPD, an internationally recognised occupier, demonstrates the quality of our proposed development at Forrest Park.” The project is already receiving interest from potential tenants, indicating strong future development prospects.
DPD plans to utilise the new facility as part of its overarching strategy to become the UK’s most sustainable delivery company. By implementing advanced logistics solutions, DPD aims to enhance service efficiency and significantly reduce emissions, aligning with their goal to achieve Net Zero by 2040. This forward-thinking approach complements their heavy investment in regional networks over the past decade to meet increasing demand.
The development of Forrest Park is part of a broader initiative led by Richardson Barberry and supported by Durham County Council and the Forrest family. Having already invested £14 million in site preparations, the project anticipates the construction phase starting early next year. This expansion is expected to make Aycliffe Business Park the largest of its kind in the region, incorporating diverse business, industrial, and retail amenities.
The collaboration between DPD and Richardson Barberry represents a pivotal development for the region, heralding economic growth and a commitment to sustainability.
