Exciting New UEFA Champions League Format
After 21 years of the same format, the UEFA Champions League is set to undergo a significant change in the 2024/25 season. The traditional group stage will be replaced with a league phase. In this new format, 36 teams will each play eight different opponents, both home and away. Unlike the previous system where teams played each other twice, each matchup will occur just once. Additionally, specialised software was also used to conduct the Champions League draw on the 29th August, replacing the previous human-operated system.2
The top 8 teams from the league phase will advance to the round of 16. Teams finishing 9-24th will compete in a knockout round to determine the remaining 8 teams. From there, the tournament will proceed with the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final, scheduled for 31st May, 2025.
