Experts share how customers could save big on their monthly outgoings with a simple contract tweak
Digital e-sim provider Nomad has revealed how much people in the UK could save per year on their monthly mobile phone bills, across 6 of the biggest providers, by making one small change.
Just under a quarter (23%) of people in the UK have an unlimited mobile data plan as of June 2024. But, according to Ofcom, smartphone users here only use around 8GB of data per month on average.
With the price of unlimited contracts usually costing a much heftier fee compared to smaller plans between 1-10GB, many Brits are potentially paying heavily for wasted data.
By taking the price of sim only plans for unlimited data and comparing to the price of the plan closest to 8GB per month for each provider, Nomad has revealed how much people in the UK could save if they were to cut their unlimited contract and take out a smaller data allowance per month instead.
Those who hold contracts with Sky, Three and GiffGaff could see the biggest savings of over £300 a year, with much smaller data packages available from £10 a month. It’s also worth noting that many of these plans still offer more than the average used 8GB of data, so well worth considering the change.

Experts at Nomad say:
“People can often overestimate how much data they really need and use domestically, especially when the majority of mobile users have access to and are often connected to wifi.
Unlimited data may be quite critical for those who are heavy streamers or gamers on the go. But if that’s not you, simply making a more conscious choice about how much data you really need would save you hundreds of pounds a year.“
Why are these plans so costly?
A lot of the more expensive contracts, including those with unlimited data, are often higher as you may be paying for the privilege of being able to use your phone whilst travelling abroad. But for those who don’t actually go abroad that often, is it really worth paying the higher monthly amount if you aren’t travelling internationally frequently throughout the year?
Consider using Nomad’s e-sims instead, where you can choose a one off payment plan that works across multiple different countries of your choosing worldwide, for a better and more flexible deal.
If users were to opt for the lower plan and use a Nomad e-sim for their holidays, would it still save money? If users were to go on 3 trips a year to Europe, Nomad currently offers a 10GB plan lasting 30 days for just £11, so that’s £33 a year for travel. That’s still a huge saving, compared to paying for the unlimited plans with the biggest providers!
And with limited deals on certain 10GB plans at the moment even further afield – Nomad is offering 10GB data for just £11 for 30 days in the US – there are much bigger savings to be had than what most of the larger providers are offering currently.
