In a move aimed at capturing a resurgent interest in vinyl records, WH Smith has announced the return of vinyl to its shelves in 80 high street locations. The prominent retailer, headquartered in Swindon, seeks to capitalise on the growing fascination among younger audiences who are increasingly drawn to the vintage charm of vinyl records.
Vinyl sales in the UK have seen a significant resurgence, rising by 11.7% in 2023 to nearly six million units sold, continuing a trend that has been on the up for 16 consecutive years. This enduring popularity is partly fuelled by high-profile releases from artists such as Taylor Swift, whose latest album, ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, is available on vinyl, and the re-issue of Oasis’ ‘The Masterplan’.
Emma Smyth, the commercial director of WH Smith’s high street operations, expressed enthusiasm about the vinyl revival: ‘I’m sure there are many customers out there who remember spending hours in record shops browsing the latest vinyl LPs and the artistic record covers. To me it’s no surprise that vinyl is growing in popularity again, and we are very excited to be bringing back record selections to more than 80 different stores across the UK for both seasoned fans and new listeners alike.’
The return of vinyl to WH Smith marks a significant strategic effort to diversify and revitalise its retail offerings. Originally a staple product for the retailer in the 1950s, vinyl records fell out of favour with the advent of CDs in the 1990s. However, the current revival presents an opportunity for WH Smith to reintroduce a classic format that resonates with both nostalgic older customers and curious younger consumers.
This initiative is seen as part of WH Smith’s broader strategy to invigorate its store portfolio, following its plan to introduce Toys ‘R’ Us concessions in 76 stores. By embracing the vinyl trend, WH Smith demonstrates its commitment to adapting to consumer preferences and fortifying its market presence.
In reviving vinyl sales, WH Smith aligns itself with ongoing consumer trends, breathing new life into its high street locations.
