Uniqlo has officially launched its 20th store in the United Kingdom, strategically located in the historical setting of Coal Drops Yard, King’s Cross, London. The store resides in a three-storey Victorian coal shed, which has been meticulously redesigned by Heatherwick Studio. Their efforts highlight the building’s industrial heritage through elements like exposed brick and wooden beams, providing a distinct shopping atmosphere.
The new store spans an impressive 9,000 square feet, offering an extensive selection of Uniqlo’s women’s and men’s apparel, along with a range of accessories. Notably, it showcases key items such as its popular adjustable-strap shoulder bag and its lightweight ‘soufflé’ yarn knitwear, crafted from a blend of wool and acrylic. An interesting addition is a vending machine offering childrenswear products, conveniently located on the ground floor.
Among the store’s unique features is a mobile repair and customisation station. This innovative feature, being trialled for the first time in the UK at Coal Drops Yard, presents customers with an opportunity to personalise and repair their clothing items. The station, which can be moved around both the store and the adjoining outdoor terrace, exemplifies Uniqlo’s commitment to enhancing the customer experience.
Furthermore, Uniqlo has engaged in a creative partnership with students from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. This collaboration has resulted in exclusive embroidery designs that incorporate elements symbolic of the local King’s Cross area, such as Regent’s Canal, enhancing the store’s connection with its surroundings.
In continuation of its UK expansion strategy, Uniqlo has also recently opened additional stores on London’s Oxford Street and in Edinburgh’s Princes Street, marking a significant step in broadening its retail footprint across the country.
Uniqlo’s innovative approach at Coal Drops Yard exemplifies its commitment to blending tradition with modern retail innovation.
