Tesco’s decision to transition from coloured to clear milk bottle caps marks a significant step towards enhancing the recyclability of milk packaging. This change affects 425 million bottles of own-brand milk produced annually, making it easier for consumers to recycle at home. The blue, red, and green caps previously used required separate processing from clear packaging, complicating recycling efforts.
By standardising cap colour, Tesco aims to improve the quality of recovered materials from household waste, facilitating a closed-loop recycling process where the caps can be continuously transformed back into new milk bottles. This innovation is expected to channel an additional 3,900 tonnes of recycled plastic into bottle manufacturing each year, underscoring Tesco’s commitment to sustainability.
Other major retailers, including Asda, Aldi, Lidl, and One Stop, have implemented similar changes, reflecting a broader industry trend towards reducing plastic waste. To maximise the recycling potential, Tesco advises customers to squash empty bottles and reapply the caps before placing them in recycling bins. This recommendation helps prevent caps from being lost or discarded during the recycling process, thus increasing the efficiency of material recovery.
According to James Waddy, Tesco’s category director for dairy, feedback from customers regarding these clear caps has been overwhelmingly positive, reflecting a growing consumer desire for sustainable packaging solutions. Waddy stated, “Ensuring our packaging is as sustainable as possible is really important to us.” This initiative is part of broader efforts by Tesco to reduce plastic usage, following previous initiatives like replacing traditional tray wraps with new ‘pillow packs’ that use significantly less plastic.
