- The Sheffield Extra store becomes the first in Yorkshire to operate a fully electric delivery fleet, enhancing air quality and reducing emissions.
- Tesco’s electric fleet has replaced 15 million diesel delivery miles since 2020, equivalent to cutting 7,500 tonnes of carbon emissions.
- Over 30 stores in the UK are now using electric delivery vans, delivering to 150,000 customers daily.
- Tesco aims to achieve a completely electric home delivery fleet by 2030, removing 22,000 cars’ worth of emissions annually.
Tesco has taken a significant step in its sustainability journey by launching its 500th electric home delivery van at the Sheffield Extra store. This store marks a milestone as the first in Yorkshire to boast a fully electric fleet of 14 vans, contributing to the delivery of 2,500 weekly deliveries.
Since the introduction of its first electric vehicle (EV) van in Greater London in 2020, Tesco has been able to replace a substantial 15 million miles previously covered by diesel vehicles, effectively reducing carbon emissions by about 7,500 tonnes. This demonstrates Tesco’s commitment to environmental responsibility and reducing its carbon footprint.
Currently, more than 30 Tesco stores and centres utilise fully electric home delivery vans across the UK. These efforts are not only instrumental in lowering emissions but also play a crucial role in improving urban air quality. The operational electric fleet caters to approximately 150,000 customers every day.
Showing their dedication to a sustainable future, Tesco is working towards operating a fully electric home delivery fleet by the year 2030. This strategy aligns with its broader ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across all its operations by 2035. The shift to electric vehicles is expected to eliminate emissions equivalent to taking 22,000 cars off the road annually.
Noteworthy is that Tesco also became the first UK retailer to introduce a zero-emission electric lorry, setting a precedent within the retail sector. Decarbonisation Minister Jesse Norman praised Tesco’s actions, noting the crucial role electric vehicles play in the UK’s transition to a Green growth economy, backed by governmental support like the Plug-in Van Grant.
Tesco’s proactive measures in expanding its electric vehicle fleet underscore its commitment to sustainability and its leadership role in promoting a net-zero future.
