Tesco becomes UK’s pioneering supermarket in flexible working rights.
- More than 300,000 employees can now request flexible working from day one.
- Anticipated legal change prompts Tesco to lead with proactive measures.
- Initiatives aim to boost employee retention and attraction.
- Tesco enhances employee support with health and financial benefits.
Tesco has emerged as the first major UK supermarket to offer all its employees the right to request flexible working arrangements from their first day at the company. This significant change precedes an expected legislative amendment due in Spring 2024, which aims to universalise the right to request flexible working from day one of employment.
The current law mandates a six-month waiting period before employees can request flexible working, making Tesco’s decision a noteworthy advancement in employee rights. By granting this option, Tesco seeks to provide greater autonomy for its workforce of over 300,000, thereby enhancing their work-life balance from the onset of their employment.
In addition to advertising all full-time positions as flexible, Tesco allows a discussion of various part-time and flexible working options across all roles. This move is expected to attract and retain talent by offering employees more choice in their working patterns.
Further solidifying its commitment to employee well-being, Tesco has introduced several recent initiatives. These include granting staff and their immediate families unlimited virtual GP appointments and expanding its Employee Assistance Programme. This programme provides access to a host of services such as sleep therapists, nutritionists, counsellors, exercise coaches, and physiotherapists.
James Goodman, Tesco UK’s people director, emphasised that initiating conversations about flexible working from the outset is imperative for a healthier work-life balance. He stated, “We aim to create a positive culture at Tesco where managers will do as much as they can to facilitate these requests for flexibility.” In line with improving employee conditions, Tesco has invested significantly in pay increases, raising the hourly rate by over 15% to £11.02.
Tesco’s proactive approach in offering flexible working rights and enhancing employee support underscores its commitment to fostering a supportive and attractive work environment.
