The Victoria & Albert Museum has announced an exciting new exhibition titled ‘Taylor Swift, Songbook Trail’ that will spotlight 16 iconic looks worn by the international pop superstar, Taylor Swift. These ensembles, sourced from Swift’s personal archive, will be unveiled to the public at the museum’s South Kensington branch starting from 27 July and will run through to 8 September 2024. This exhibition provides fans and fashion enthusiasts an opportunity to see items such as customised cowboy boots that symbolise Swift’s early country music days and a black ruffled shoulder dress featured in the music video for her recent single, ‘Fortnight’.
Alongside these costumes, the exhibition will display Swift’s instruments, music awards, and exclusive storyboards, providing insight into her artistic journey. This marks the first time many of these personal items are being shown publicly, promising a unique experience for visitors wanting to explore the intersection of music and fashion history.
The backdrop of this exhibition coincides with Swift’s European leg of her two-year ‘Eras’ tour. Having already performed multiple shows across cities like Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff, and London, her tour is anticipated to bolster the UK economy by £1 billion. Barclays bank estimates that fans will spend an average of £848 on related expenses such as tickets, travel, accommodation, and outfits.
Kate Bailey, the Senior Curator for Theatre and Performance at the V&A, expressed enthusiasm for the exhibit, stating, ‘We are delighted to be able to display a range of iconic looks worn by Taylor Swift at the V&A this summer. Each [look] celebrating a chapter in the artist’s musical journey. Taylor Swift’s songs like objects tell stories, often drawing from art, history and literature.’ Bailey also hopes this ‘theatrical trail’ will inspire visitors to delve deeper into the creative narratives of both Swift’s career and the museum’s collections.
The V&A continues to attract diverse audiences with its exhibitions, having concurrently hosted a display dedicated to supermodel Naomi Campbell since June. This focus on impactful figures in the arts underscores the museum’s commitment to celebrating cultural icons and their contributions to contemporary and historical narratives.
The upcoming Taylor Swift exhibition at the V&A promises a compelling exploration of fashion and art, reflecting the multifaceted stories embedded in her career.
