Waitrose has achieved a significant milestone by receiving regenerative agricultural certification for its vineyards and orchards at the Leckford Estate, marking a first in the UK. The certification, provided by the global verification entity Regenified, endorses Waitrose’s dedication to environmentally sustainable agriculture.
The produce certified includes grapes, apples, and pears, all grown in a manner that emphasises harmony with nature. This certification not only recognises Waitrose’s efforts but also sets a precedent for sustainable farming practices in the region.
Integral to this achievement is Waitrose’s strategic plan to develop a Centre of Excellence at its Leckford farm. This centre aims to become a resource for farmers eager to transition to regenerative agriculture, offering them tools, workshops, and online materials.
Andrew Hoad, the head of Leckford Estate, expressed pride in being the first UK vineyard and orchard to receive this certification. “Our commitment to regenerative farming reflects our belief that producing high-quality products and caring for the environment go hand in hand,” Hoad stated.
Waitrose’s journey towards sustainable agriculture is not new. Earlier this year, the company collaborated with Wildfarmed to produce a Farmhouse loaf using wheat grown at Leckford Estate. This partnership underscores their ongoing commitment to nature-friendly processes.
Waitrose’s Senior Agriculture Manager, Jake Pickering, has assured consumers that these advancements in farming will not result in higher prices. He emphasised the company’s capability to deliver regenerative agricultural practices while maintaining exceptional value for customers.
Waitrose’s regenerative certification exemplifies its leadership in sustainable agriculture, paving the way for future innovations.
