One Stop is advancing its sustainability goals by integrating Whywaste technology across its stores.
- The Whywaste solution provides data-driven recommendations to minimise food waste by targeting products nearing expiration.
- A trial in four stores achieved a significant reduction in food waste, prompting a nationwide rollout.
- Richard Turton of One Stop underscores the initiative’s potential to reduce environmental impact.
- Whywaste’s successful collaborations with other retailers further highlight the effectiveness of their technology.
In a strategic move towards sustainability, One Stop has joined forces with Whywaste, a Swedish food tech leader, aiming to reduce food waste throughout its entire store network. The collaborative effort focuses on utilising Whywaste’s cutting-edge technology to track product expiration dates closely, subsequently providing markdown recommendations. This approach ensures that products on the brink of expiration are sold rather than disposed of, effectively reducing waste.
Earlier, Whywaste’s technology was piloted in four of One Stop’s locations, yielding promising results. The pilot saw a 14.3% decrease in food waste concerning fresh and ambient products. Encouraged by this success, One Stop has now committed to deploying the Whywaste solution across its 1,000-store portfolio. This move aligns with the company’s broader environmental target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Richard Turton, head of supply chain at One Stop, expressed the company’s enthusiasm about the partnership. He stated, ‘We’re thrilled to be working with Whywaste – we’re committed to reducing food waste and our environmental impact as much as we can, where we can.’ Turton highlighted that the software’s ability to provide fair-priced discounts on nearly expired products benefits customers by offering budget-friendly shopping options.
Complementing this sentiment, Ben Holden, Whywaste’s head of business development, remarked on the positive trend of retailers increasingly valuing sustainability. He noted that Whywaste’s collaborations have extended to other major retailers like Asda and Spar, underscoring the technology’s proven capability in the field. In fact, Spar locations utilising Whywaste’s system observed up to a 40% reduction in food waste.
Expanding the use of Whywaste technology demonstrates One Stop’s proactive stance in addressing food waste and reinforces its commitment to sustainability.
