Marks and Spencer reveals a transformative £13 million investment aimed at enhancing its Newcastle store on Northumberland Street, promising an enriched customer experience. The comprehensive redesign of the store’s interior is set to begin this month and will be executed in stages to ensure that the store remains operational throughout the construction period.
The transformation will see the introduction of a new foodhall expected to be completed later in the year. Meanwhile, shoppers can look forward to extensive improvements within the clothing, home, and beauty departments, anticipated to be finalised by early 2024. This strategic enhancement is set to augment the consumer shopping experience substantially.
In line with this significant investment, M&S plans to extend its innovative mobile ‘Scan & Shop‘ system, currently utilised by 33,000 customers weekly, thereby expanding its reach across the North East. This system enables customers to use their smartphones for scanning and bagging items during their shopping trips, offering a more streamlined and efficient process.
The North East’s investment mirrors similar strategic developments in London, where a £12.5 million investment is planned for this year, encompassing the creation of 200 new jobs and expanding the store portfolio. Such initiatives underscore M&S’s fervent commitment to its expansion objectives.
Regional manager Helen Cowie articulated the company’s enduring connection to the North East, emphasising M&S’s deep roots in the community. With a presence on Northumberland Street since 1932, Cowie conveyed pride in M&S’s longstanding dedication to serving the local community and reaffirmed its commitment to providing the best M&S experiences.
The £13 million investment reinforces M&S’s commitment to innovation and expansion in the North East.
