Morrisons introduces white eggs as part of its ‘For Farmers’ initiative.
- White eggs, nutritionally similar to brown eggs, have a lower carbon footprint.
- Hens laying white eggs require less feed, reducing environmental impact.
- The ‘For Farmers’ scheme has returned over £25m to farmers since 2015.
- Morrisons collaborates with egg farmers to promote sustainability.
In a move to promote sustainability, Morrisons has introduced a new line of white eggs as part of its ‘For Farmers’ initiative. This initiative allows customers to contribute to farmers’ welfare by purchasing products that ensure additional financial support back to the agricultural community. Specifically, the introduction of white eggs is a strategic effort to offer environmentally friendly options to consumers.
White eggs, unlike their brown counterparts, are laid by hens that require less feed to produce the same amount of eggs. This results in a lower carbon footprint and aligns with Morrisons’ goal of providing more sustainable shopping choices. The nutritional profile of white eggs mirrors that of the more commonly sold brown eggs, with the only difference being the colour of the shell, a characteristic determined by the hen’s breed.
Morrisons has assured that the hens producing eggs for the Chuckle Eggs range are granted the freedom to roam outdoors at their leisure, with access to woodland ranges and bee-friendly flower strips. This approach not only supports animal welfare but also encourages biodiversity, aligning with broader sustainability goals.
Since its inception in 2015, the ‘For Farmers’ range has been instrumental in returning over £25 million to farmers. This financial support aids farmers in investing in infrastructure and future-proofing their operations. Moreover, Morrisons collaborates with a network of more than 65 egg farmers, all of whom adhere to the British Lion code and RSPCA or equivalent standards.
Additionally, Morrisons provides comprehensive carbon footprinting analysis for each flock. By offering tailored support for farmers to create sustainable growth plans, Morrisons not only bolsters the financial stability of the farms but also enhances their environmental stewardship. Sophie Throup, Morrisons’ technical and sustainability director, remarked, “The lower carbon footprint benefits of using white hens means we offer a more environmentally friendly egg.”
Morrisons’ introduction of white eggs underscores its commitment to sustainability and farmer support.
