Moonpig has launched a new artificial intelligence-driven handwriting tool that aims to recreate the personal feel of handwritten messages in its digitally made-to-order cards. This tool allows users to create their unique digital handwriting by manually drawing each letter of the alphabet in both upper and lower case. The resulting font is stored in their account for ongoing use, providing a new level of personalised communication for online card-sending.
The initiative, which took Moonpig’s AI specialists a year to develop, promises to bridge the gap between the efficiency of digital messaging and the authenticity of traditional handwritten notes. Nickyl Raithatha, the chief executive of Moonpig, commented on the development, saying, “Handwriting has always been a big barrier for people not wanting to send cards online because they don’t feel it’s personal enough. This product bridges the gap between digital convenience and heartfelt, handwritten personalisation.“
In addition to the handwriting feature, Moonpig intends to launch AI-generated stickers by the end of the year, further enhancing the customisation options available to users. This move reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to blend advanced technology with personalisation in consumer products.
Financially, Moonpig has experienced some challenges. The company recently reported a pre-tax loss of £33.3 million for the six months leading up to the end of October, compared to an £18.9 million profit in the same period the previous year. However, they saw a 3.8% increase in revenue, reaching £158 million. This increase was largely attributed to robust sales within the Moonpig brand, which partially offset the difficulties faced in their experiences division.
Moonpig’s AI-driven handwriting tool signifies a noteworthy attempt to enhance digital personalisation, amid challenging financial times.
