JD Sports announces leadership change in its remuneration committee for continued governance enhancement.
- Suzi Williams to step down as chair after completing key governance reforms since 2022.
- Angela Luger set to assume the role, bringing extensive experience from her tenure at Manchester Airport Group.
- Williams cites expanding commitments as a reason for her departure, ensuring a smooth transition.
- The company’s chair, Andy Higginson, commends Williams for her valuable contributions to remuneration policy.
JD Sports has confirmed a significant change in its leadership structure, particularly within the remuneration committee. The current chair, Suzi Williams, will step down from her role on 1 November. Williams, who joined JD Sports in May 2022, has been instrumental in the development and execution of a new remuneration policy and operating framework that have become foundational to the company’s governance.
Williams stated her decision comes as a result of expanding commitments, aligning with the completion of her primary tasks concerning remuneration governance. She expressed that with the new policy fully implemented and operational, the timing was appropriate to transfer the reins to a new chair, allowing for the continuation of governance advancements.
Angela Luger will take over as chair of the remuneration committee on 1 October. Luger has amassed significant experience in similar roles, including as chair of the remuneration committees at Manchester Airport Group and SCS. Her early involvement with JD Sports’ board and committee since June 2023 marks a transition aimed at further solidifying the governance structure set forth by her predecessor.
Chairman of JD Sports, Andy Higginson, acknowledged the contributions made by Williams, highlighting her role in the rapid normalisation of remuneration policies and the establishment of a robust governance framework. He noted the improved shareholder support achieved under her leadership as a testament to her dedication and strategic acumen.
In a related leadership shift, Darren Shapland will replace Angela Luger as the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) committee chair on 1 October. Shapland, who joined the board alongside Luger in June 2023, has been actively involved with the ESG committee since its establishment, ready to further its initiatives.
This transition in JD Sports’ remuneration committee leadership underscores the company’s commitment to progressive governance and strategic succession planning.
