The skyscraper, still maintaining its 76-storey stature, will eclipse the Deansgate South Tower, standing over 200 meters tall. These modifications represent a shift from the initial retail-focused plan to a more diversified approach, blending residential and hospitality elements.
The decision by developers Salboy to include hotel accommodations alongside the 780 apartments initially planned marks a strategic adaptation. This change is intended to bolster Manchester’s burgeoning tourism sector while maintaining the building’s iconic height. With this move, the skyscraper will provide a unified entrance for both residents and hotel patrons, enhancing the accessibility and flow within the structure.
Salboy’s Managing Director, Simon Ismail, articulated the vision behind this revision, stating that the project aims to create a vibrant destination catering to both living and leisure needs. He also highlighted the project’s alignment with Manchester’s growth and transformation goals, underscoring its accessibility via public transport.
Details regarding the number of hotel rooms remain unspecified, as do potential adjustments to the number of residential units. Nevertheless, developers assure that Viadux 2b, comprising 133 affordable homes, will remain unaffected by the changes to Viadux 2a. This commitment reflects Salboy’s dedication to maintaining community-oriented aspects within the broader development project.
The enhancements planned for the surrounding public spaces, including a green area on Great Bridgewater Street, remain on course. Additionally, the establishment of a new public restaurant is anticipated to contribute positively to the neighbourhood’s social and dining landscape.
