The Fashion & Textile Children’s Trust (FTCT) has introduced its second edition of the back-to-school fundraising campaign. This initiative aspires to alleviate financial stress encountered by families within the fashion and textile industry as a new school year looms. Initially launched in June 2023, this campaign addresses the critical needs associated with school uniforms, study furniture, and necessary technology for students.
A survey involving 54 parents employed in the UK fashion and textile sector, who have previously been beneficiaries of FTCT grants, underscores the grave financial challenges faced. 75% of respondents acknowledged experiencing severe stress regarding the expenses linked to the back-to-school period, and 70% expressed an inability to allocate funds specifically for these impending costs.
Scheduled from Monday, 1 July to Wednesday, 31 July 2024, the campaign aspires to generate £5,000. This sum is expected to provide a complete school uniform for 25 children, underpinning FTCT’s commitment to assisting families grappling with economic hardships.
FTCT’s Chief Executive, Anna Pangbourne, articulated the campaign’s purpose, emphasising the harsh financial realities confronting children nationwide, including those from families linked to the fashion and textile sectors. She noted that this period notably intensifies financial burdens on parents, urging the industry to collectively mitigate these challenges and ensure every child is equipped for schooling success.
Reflecting on the charity’s impact, it is noteworthy that FTCT celebrated its 170th anniversary in 2023 and consistently disburses over £400,000 annually in grants. The charity garnered substantial support, raising £8,300 at the Drapers Awards in November 2023 and £2,800 at the Drapers Sustainable Fashion Awards in March 2024, underscoring its substantial role within the industry.
The FTCT’s ongoing efforts demonstrate its steadfast dedication to supporting families in the fashion and textile sector facing financial challenges.
