Frasers Group receives council approval for new headquarters on designated green belt.
- Council decision sees a tight 7-5 vote in favour despite green belt concerns.
- New site planned for Warwickshire to replace current Shirebrook HQ.
- Plans include extensive facilities on 275 acres of farmland.
- Local objections largely ignored in favour of economic benefits.
Frasers Group has gained official approval from Rugby Borough Council to establish its new headquarters on green belt land in Warwickshire. The council decision, which resulted in a narrow 7 to 5 vote, highlights the council’s agreement with planning officers’ assessment that the economic advantages provided by the new headquarters outweigh the potential environmental concerns.
Despite receiving 194 letters of objection from local campaigners, who are displeased with the use of designated farmland for development, the project will go forward. The new location, which was initially acquired by Frasers Group for £53.5 million, promises substantial economic contributions to the region.
The development on 275 acres will feature not only office spaces but also retail areas, five warehouses, and a 100-bed hotel. Additional facilities planned include a swimming pool, a gym, various sports amenities, a training academy complete with an auditorium, a nursery, multi-storey parking, and even a helipad.
The relocation from the existing Shirebrook headquarters signals a significant expansion for the Frasers Group, and while local opposition has been pronounced, the economic incentives, as argued by the council’s decision, appear to have carried more weight in the final verdict.
The approval marks a significant step forward for Frasers Group’s growth strategy despite local opposition.
