The demand for home food delivery has been on a steady rise in the UK, with market growth projected at 8.4% annually. As more food is ordered, consumers are sharpening their focus on the hygiene and safety of deliveries, according to research from CCS McLays.
A significant 86% of surveyed individuals believe it is the responsibility of food outlets to ensure food arrives without tampering. Half of the respondents insist on the necessity for tamper-evident packaging to become a standard part of delivery services. Ian Hall of CCS McLays states, “UK consumers are becoming increasingly unforgiving. Today, it’s about nailing the essentials – secure, fresh, tamper-free food deliveries. One slip-up, and they’re gone.”
For retailers, negative experiences have profound implications. Nearly half of the consumers (44%) are unlikely to reorder from a service after a single bad experience. This sentiment is more prevalent among older demographics, with just a small fraction considering giving a second chance after dissatisfaction.
A YouGov survey involving 2,000 adults found that 55% are concerned about delivery hygiene standards, while 10% suspect tampering. The younger demographic, aged 18 to 24, shows a considerable 24% expressing specific concerns about tampering, highlighting a trust issue among digital natives.
Discontent extends beyond hygiene; it also encompasses issues like incorrect temperatures (53%), missing items (50%), wrong orders (40%), poor food condition (22%), and damaged packaging (21%). Consumers overwhelmingly express that improvements like timely arrivals, sealed containers, and clear tracking are crucial for enhancing trust.
