Shaftesbury Capital, the developer behind the latest initiative, has announced a ‘groundbreaking’ Christmas light scheme for London’s Carnaby Street. The initiative, known as ‘Into the Light’, will officially launch on 7 November, introducing a series of large star installations that mark the entry points to this iconic street, renowned globally for its vibrant atmosphere and dynamic retail environment.
These installations will be complemented by 60-metre-long sculptural light forms that will grace the skies above Carnaby Street. What sets this display apart is its incorporation of more than 60,000 fully programmable LEDs, offering a highly innovative approach to festive lighting in London. This not only reflects the capital’s tradition of embracing bold and creative designs but sets a new precedent in utilising technology for public displays.
Designed to enhance both the shopping and dining experiences, the ‘Into the Light’ installation will extend its luminous reach into Kingly Court, thereby broadening its impact beyond Carnaby Street itself. The lights will operate on energy sourced exclusively from renewable providers, aligning the project with contemporary sustainability initiatives crucial for urban developments.
Michelle McGrath, Executive Director at Shaftesbury Capital, articulated the vision behind the project by stating, ‘Soho and Carnaby Street have an incredibly rich history of innovation, design and positively connecting with people. The new Christmas lights scheme embodies this with a long-term investment, taking a creative and more sustainable approach.’ This statement underscores the dual focus on aesthetic brilliance and ecological responsibility.
With a commitment to being a fixture for at least five years, the display is designed for adaptability, allowing modifications and enhancements each year to continue delighting visitors. This strategic foresight ensures that the scheme remains a relevant and exciting experience, potentially increasing footfall and visitor engagement through its evolving light art.
This innovative Christmas light display signifies a harmonious blend of sustainability and tradition, poised to become an enduring feature of Carnaby Street.
