Asda has announced a significant investment in renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions.
- The company is establishing two new bio-LNG refuelling stations in collaboration with Gasrec.
- This initiative is part of Asda’s strategy to achieve net zero operations by 2040.
- Asda has already achieved a 41% reduction in carbon emissions since 2015.
- The company plans to further reduce emissions by 50% by 2025.
Asda is set to strengthen its environmental commitments by investing in the establishment of two additional bio-liquefied natural gas (bio-LNG) refuelling stations. These facilities, to be located in Warrington and Dartford, are part of a collaboration with the commercial vehicle fuel producer Gasrec. This development will bring the total number of operational bio-LNG stations under Asda’s management to 13.
Renowned for operating over 780 LNG-fuelled vehicles, Asda holds the distinction of managing the UK’s largest fleet of LNG trucks. The transition to renewable fuel solutions such as bio-LNG is a key aspect of Asda’s broader strategy to expedite its shift towards decarbonisation, aiming to achieve net zero operations by the year 2040.
John Rogerson, Asda’s Central Fleet Operations Manager, highlighted the strategic importance of this decision, stating that LNG trucks are currently the leading alternative fuel option for operators like ourselves. He further elaborated that their extensive investments in establishing a UK-wide LNG distribution network are crucial for achieving a sustainable future and significantly reducing carbon emissions across their operations.
Earlier in the year, Asda reported a substantial reduction of 41% in its operational carbon emissions compared to 2015 levels. The company is on track to enhance this figure to a 50% reduction by 2025. Such initiatives underline Asda’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its determination to leverage innovative partnerships and technologies to accomplish these ambitious goals.
Additionally, as part of its multifaceted environmental strategy, Asda has partnered with HSBC UK to launch a sustainability-linked enhancement to its Supply Chain Finance scheme. This innovative approach underscores the company’s dedication to integrating sustainability into the core of its financial and operational strategies.
Asda’s proactive investments and strategic collaborations underscore its resolute commitment to achieving sustainability and operational excellence in the face of evolving environmental challenges.
