Asda has announced a new nationwide initiative, urging shoppers to donate pre-loved children’s books. This programme is designed to benefit local communities by enhancing access to literature for families. The supermarket chain has partnered with the Children’s Books Project, a literacy charity that will play a key role in redistributing these donations.
Earlier this year, a trial programme was conducted in Asda stores located in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, and London, resulting in the collection and redistribution of over 6,000 books. Buoyed by the success of the trial, Asda has now expanded the initiative to encompass over 388 stores across the country.
Each participating store will have a dedicated donation trolley, where customers can conveniently drop off their book donations. The initiative is championed by the store’s Customer and Community Champion, reflecting Asda’s commitment to community engagement.
As part of the programme, approximately 20,000 children will have the opportunity to participate in book gifting festivals hosted by their schools or community groups. Carolyn Francis, Asda’s local community adviser, highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating, “It’s great to have an accessible book donation point in our store where we can then redistribute them back into our local community. All children should be able to access a book without the cost being a barrier.”
This book donation initiative follows Asda’s recent introduction of the Cashpot for Schools campaign, which aims to raise significant funds for primary schools via its loyalty programme. The supermarket reported raising £1.1 million in merely four days from the campaign’s commencement.
Asda’s book donation drive exemplifies its commitment to literacy and community support, while demonstrating successful collaboration with charitable organisations.
