Asda is extending its alliance with Too Good To Go, the largest global surplus food marketplace, to encompass nearly 1,000 sites, effective from September. This expansion introduces the food redistribution programme to a broader audience, featuring its innovative ‘Surprise Bags’. Users can purchase these bags through the app, containing a minimum of £9 worth of products for only £3.30.
The integration of Too Good To Go spans multiple formats under Asda’s umbrella, including its supermarkets, Express stores, and associated foodservice outlets such as Leon, Greggs, Sbarro, and Subway. This initiative follows a trial phase, reflecting a successful test case across select locations, and is now rolled out extensively due to positive customer response.
Since initiating the partnership in 2021, more than two million kilograms of food have been saved from going to waste. The programme offers a mix of chilled items, ready meals, bakery products, and produce nearing use-by dates, providing a cost-effective solution for consumers while addressing excess food issues.
Asda’s vice president for commercial strategy, Sam Dickson, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, “We’re delighted to be bringing Too Good To Go to more sites across our estate and our food service partners, as we remain committed to reducing food waste through innovative solutions.”
This development is part of Asda’s consistent strategy to explore collaborative solutions to combat food wastage. In addition to Too Good To Go, Asda has expanded its ‘back of store’ donation program, partnering with FareShare and local food-sharing app Olio, enhancing its redistribution channels significantly.
Asda’s expansion of its partnership with Too Good To Go signifies a robust endeavour to minimise food waste, reflecting its commitment to sustainability.
