Aldi has secured its position as the least expensive supermarket in the UK for the fifteenth month in succession, as per the consumer advocacy group Which?. By evaluating the costs of groceries and household essentials, Aldi emerged as a leader by offering a basket at the cost of £65.21.
In comparison, Tesco’s basket stood at £74, marking a notable difference of over £8, thus emphasising Aldi’s commitment to delivering savings. Waitrose was identified as the most costly, with an average basket price reaching £79.51, which is £14.30 higher than Aldi’s basket.
Moreover, the data disclosed that Morrisons’ basket exceeded Aldi’s by £10.16, while Lidl presented a slight increase in cost, priced at £66.53. Such positioning underscores Aldi’s strategic pricing in the competitive supermarket landscape.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, commented on the financial strains families face as school and university terms commence. She stated, “As summer draws to a close and families begin preparing to go back to school or university, August and September can represent financially challenging months for many. However, with fifteen consecutive months as the UK’s cheapest supermarket, families can rest assured that they can rely on us for great quality products at the lowest possible prices, and that we’ll continue to support our customers in these testing times.”
In addition to grocery savings, Aldi has launched a ‘must-have’ range of student essentials at competitive prices, starting from £1.99, as part of its Specialbuys. Ashfield noted, “As the cost of kitting out new digs can quickly add up, Aldi has launched a must-have range of student essentials featuring everything from bedding and décor to pots, pans, and air fryers – with prices starting from as little as £1.99.” This move is indicative of Aldi’s strategy to broaden its appeal to economically-minded consumers.
Aldi’s sustained affordability and strategic offerings reinforce its position as a leading, cost-effective choice for Britain’s shoppers.
